Triumph of the swill

Although is has become almost a cliché, I continue to be amazed at how very similar George W. Bush's packaging by his media handlers compares to how Hitler was portrayed in Leni Reifenstahl's 1935 propaganda film "Triumph of the Will." Today's New York Times ran an article on the 'stagecraft' used in presenting Doubleyah to the media including framing him with the profiles of the petrified presidents of Mount Rushmore in the background to make him look more 'presidential' Sometimes the manipulation is more subtle. According to the Times, on Tuesday, at a speech promoting his economic plan in Indianapolis, White House aides went so far as to ask people in the crowd behind Mr. Bush to take off their ties, so they would look more like the ordinary folk the president said would benefit from his tax cut. Are we still buying this triumphalist propaganda after almost 70 years? It appears that we are.
